Scholastic Aptitude and Assessment

Depending on your decade of birth, starting in 1926 preparation for the SAT (variously named the Scholastic Aptitude Test, Scholastic Assessment Test, or simply "SAT", as in "KFC") has been a rite of passage for students planning to continue their education beyond High School. [1]

While the SAT's creators, The College Board, states that the SAT is intended to measure literacy, numeracy, and writing skills that are needed for academic success in college [2], with its sections on Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, the SAT is fundamentally a test of the student's ability to Communicate. Reading and Writing are tools used to communicate concepts, ideas, and meaning, while Mathematics is a language used to communicate quantity, structure, space, change, and multiple perspectives. [3]


As an assessment of communication, the SAT is fundamentally an Assessment of Intelligence. While scholars continue to debate the term "intelligence" [4], we continue to discover intelligent behavior in animals, plants, bacteria, slime molds, fungi, and human-made computing systems. From the tiniest single-cell life, to large colonies, hives, and schools, to vast interconnected forests that span continents, Communication among individuals is what enables these collective organisms to learn, adapt, survive, and grow in an ever-changing, living environment.


Humans are no different. Humans are based on the same biological materials and instructions that enable life to survive everywhere we have looked on Earth. Cultural intelligence relies on effective communication among individuals. Good health relies on communication among the many different organs and cell systems contained in our bodies that are the result of the cell differentiation that permitted our stem cells to use identical copies of DNA to decide what types, structures, and functions are needed to survive as a complex multi-cell organism. Even the over 80 Billion nerve cells of our brains communicate through the 100 to 1000 Trillion synapses [5] that connect them using electric charge and more than 100 different types of chemical neurotransmitters. [6]


Biological Intelligence is an exciting area of study. Machine Intelligence is exciting as well. As soon as we discover more things about ourselves, scientists and engineers quickly experiment with ways to utilize these discoveries in machines. And that enables us to learn more about ourselves. This is a healthy, reinforcing, learning cycle that transforms Science Fiction into Science Future into Science Present. This is only made possible through open, rapid, diverse modes of Communication among individuals.
